Mission ist eines der zentralen Elemente der katholischen Kirche. „Darum geht zu allen Völkern, und macht alle Menschen zu meinen Jüngern; tauft sie auf den Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes“ (Mt 28,19). Mit diesen Worten beauftragte Jesus seine Jünger mit der Verkündigung der Frohen Botschaft. Inspiriert von diesen Worten Jesu haben verschiedene Menschen in den letzten 2000 Jahren versucht, ihre Missionsaufträge auf unterschiedliche Weise zu erfüllen. Im 17. Jahrhundert vernahm Franz von Sales diesen Ruf Christi und versuchte, diesen Missionsauftrag durch seine missionarischen Bemühungen zu erfüllen. Dieser Beitrag untersucht, wie Franz von Sales diesen Auftrag in der Mission von Chablais erfüllt hat indem er sich auf die zentrale Frage konzentriert: Was macht Franz von Sales zu einem dynamischen Missionar und eifrigen Pfarrer von Chablais, und was hat sein missionarischer und pastoraler Geist zur missionarischen Dynamik der Kirche beigetragen? Im Verlauf dieser Studie werden auch einige weitere Fragen formuliert, um die Leistung von Franz von Sales zu erforschen: Vor welchen Herausforderungen stand Franz von Sales und wie effektiv ging er mit diesen Herausforderungen um? Welche Methoden und Techniken verwendete Franz von Sales in der Chablais-Mission und wie zeigte er seine missionarische Dynamik in seiner Chablais-Mission? Welche Früchte brachte die Chablais-Mission für die Kirche im Besonderen und auch im größeren Kontext? In dieser Abhandlung werden ausreichend Studien durchgeführt, um Antworten auf alle diese Fragen zu finden. Die Herausforderungen der pastoralen Arbeit sind in verschiedenen Teilen der Welt und in verschiedenen Jahrhunderten unterschiedlich. Diese These untersucht sie im Hinblick auf Franz von Sales. Im nächsten Schritt werden hier die Methoden untersucht, mit denen Franz von Sales diese Herausforderungen bewältigt hat. Im größeren Kontext der Kirche und der Welt geht es um die Einflüsse der Chablais Mission auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Ausgehend von der missionarischen Dynamik und dem Geist des Franz von Sales geht es darum zu verstehen, wie dieser missionarische Geist des Franz von Sales eine große Hilfe für die missionarische Dynamik der Kirche sein kann. Die vorliegende Forschung möchte historische Erkenntnisse für Zukunft fruchtbar machen. Damit können sie eine relevante Hilfe für die Missionare in allen Zeiten sein. Die Leser dieser Arbeit können sich Wissen über die Herausforderungen und die Missionstaktiken des 17. Jahrhunderts aneignen und dadurch etwas aus den Missionsaktivitäten von Franz von Sales für ihre Arbeit und ihr Leben übernehmen. Diese Thesis stellt die Missionstaktiken von Franz von Sales als Ansatz zur Verkündigung der Frohen Botschaft mitten in die Herausforderungen unserer Zeit. Insofern könnte sie als Leitfaden für die Bewältigung heutiger missionarischer Herausforderungen dienen.

Mission is one of the central elements of the Catholic Church. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Mt. 28, 18-19). These were the words of Jesus commissioning his disciples for the proclamation of the Good News. Prompted by these words of Jesus over the last two thousand years, various persons have tried to fulfil their missionary assignments in various ways. In the 17th century, Francis heard this call of Christ and tried to fulfil this mission assignment through his missionary endeavours. This paper enquires into how Francis was fulfilling this assignment in the mission of Chablais. In order to study the mission initiative of Francis, the research focusses on the central question: What makes SFS a dynamic missionary and zealous pastor of Chablais and what has brought his missionary and pastoral spirit to the missionary dynamism of the Church? Through the process of this study, some further questions are also formulated to inquire into the role of Francis: What were the challenges faced by Francis and how effectively did he deal with these challenges? What were the methods and techniques used by Francis in the mission of Chablais and how was Francis exhibiting his missionary dynamism in his Chablais Mission? What were the fruits of the Chablais mission both in that particular context and in the larger context, of the Church? Sufficient study is undertaken in this paper to find answers to all these questions. The challenges of pastoral work vary tremendously throughout the world and across the ages; all of which this paper examines in regard to Francis. As the next step, this paper enquires into methods used by Francis in order to tackle these challenges. In the larger context of Church and world, this paper examines the influences of Chablais on various levels. From the missionary dynamism and the spirit of Francis, this paper aims to understand how this missionary spirit of Francis can be a great help to the missionary dynamism of the Church. The conclusions of this research will prove relevant to missionaries in the future. The readers of this paper will learn about the challenges and the missionary tactics of the 17th century and, thereby, they can personalise something from the missionary activities of Francis. In a real missionary situation, this paper could become a guide to address today’s missionary challenges and it presents the mission-tactics of Francis as an approach to the proclamation of the Good News even in midst of the challenges of our time.
