Um Klarheit über mögliche Fallstricke bei der medialen Sichtbarmachung von Armut zu gewinnen, lohnt ein Blick in die Vergangenheit: In dieser Masterarbeit untersuche ich die Verbindung zwischen dem Begriffspaar der "deserving"/ "undeserving poor" und zwei dokumentarfotografisch verstandenen Beispielen aus der US-amerikanischen Geschichte – der Fotografie von Jacob Riis und der Fotografie der Farm Security Administration. Ich beleuchte das erkenntnistheoretische Fundament einer Unterteilung in die "deserving" und die "undeserving poor", ihre Ideengeschichte in den USA und ihre Manifestation in den Fotografien. Ich zeige in dieser Arbeit, dass Konzeptionen von "deservingness" die Motivauswahl und Ästhetik der fotografischen Kollektionen wesentlich prägen. Außerdem finde ich heraus, dass der US-amerikanische Gründungsmythos auf eine Unterscheidung zwischen "deserving" und "undeserving" aufbaut und dass aus den behandelten Fotografien eine Positionierung zu dem Selbstverständnis der USA spricht.

In order to identify possible pitfalls in the media visualization of poverty, it is worth taking a look into the past: in this master's thesis, I examine the connection between the conceptual pair of the "deserving"/"undeserving poor" and two photographic examples from US history – the photography of Jacob Riis and the photography of the Farm Security Administration. I shed light on the epistemological foundation of a division into the "deserving" and the "undeserving poor", its ideological history in the USA and its manifestation in the photographs. In this work I show that conceptions of deservingness are pivotal to the aesthetics and the choice of motifs of these photographic collections. Additionally I detect that the ‚American Dream‘ is based on the distinction between the "deserving" and the "undeserving", and I depict how the photographs in question take a position in regards to the self-image of the USA.
