Abstract (eng)
This master's thesis explores the potential and challenges of establishing a cooperative in the photography industry in Lower Austria. Faced with economic challenges such as rising rents and energy costs, particularly for sole proprietorships (EPUs) and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the cooperative model offers possible solutions. The study analyzes qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive picture of the industry´s current situation, the challenges photographers face, and their attitude towards forming a cooperative. Key findings indicate that many photographers enter the industry as career changers and rely on word-of-mouth for job acquisition. The majority of them does not own external facilities, such as studios and sees themselves as lone fighters. Although the industry is perceived as individualistic, many photographers recognize the potential benefits of a cooperative, such as information exchange and improved market positioning. However, there is skepticism about losing independence and the effectiveness of cooperatives in improving the current situation. The thesis recommends promoting networks, flexible studio use, educational support, and emphasizing the benefits of cooperatives to increase acceptance.
