Abstract (eng)
Due to the Standardized Reife- und Diplomprüfung in Austria, it is essential to examine in detail the text types assessed in the written Matura. As it is a standardized examination, school textbooks should also be aligned with the guidelines of the Bundesministerium Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung (Bmbwf) and provide guidance for students to achieve the requirements. This study focuses precisely on these printed sample texts. The sample texts were examined for their linguistic characteristics according to the Systemic Functional Linguistic Theory by Michael Alexander Halliday. The investigated text types included articles, blog posts, blog comments, essays, and reports. The results indicate that not all sample texts meet the requirements, and there are also different interpretations of the Bmbwf guidelines. Therefore, it is recommended to elaborate on the requirements of each text type and to differentiate them more precisely, as some overlap in certain aspects. Likewise, it is suggested that the Bmbwf publish its own sample texts for all relevant text types for the school leaving exam, along with indications of how the respective requirements were met.
