Abstract (eng)
The human ability to anticipate the future and the associated determination of current behaviour, as well as individual attitudes and orientations towards the future, are captured with the psychological construct of "Future Time Perspective". In the educational context, it has already been shown that a future perspective acts as a strong motivational variable and has a positive effect on performance and time investment in learning, among other things. This has not yet been replicated in the German-speaking world. The aim of this study was to investigate and validate the future time perspective and part of the nomological network using translated established measurement instruments. The study was conducted on a sample of 544 Austrian student teachers. The translated measurement instruments used were the unidimensional Future Time Perspective Scale according to Carstensen and Lang (1996), the multidimensional Future Time Perspective Scale according to Husman and Shell (2008), and the domain-specific long-term facets study and professional career, social relations and leisure time of the Time Perspective Questionnaire according to Stouthard and Peetsma (1999). Factorial validity was confirmed using the DWLS estimation method. It was shown that most operationalisations of future perspective are positively associated with each other, which is why construct validity can be assumed. Nomological validity was confirmed by the largely positive relationships of the various future time perspective scales with self-efficacy, control beliefs, conscientiousness and extraversion. Reliability was acceptable to high for most of the scales, but internal consistency was low for the subscales extension and valence (Husman & Shell, 2008) and for the study and professional career facet (Stouthard & Peetsma, 1999). Furthermore, conscientiousness was found to be a predictor of students' grade point average along with time commitment to learning and maternal socioeconomic status. Multidimensional approaches are more suitable for assessing the future time perspective in an educational context.
