Marcus Tullius Cicero (klassische Aussprache: [ˈkɪkɛroː]; * 3. Januar 106 v. Chr. in Arpinum; † 7. Dezember 43 v. Chr. bei Formiae) war ein römischer Politiker, Anwalt,Konsul, Schriftsteller und Philosoph. Er gilt als der berühmteste Redner Roms. Als Schriftsteller galt er schon für die Antike als stilistisches Vorbild. Seine philosophischem Werke beruhen in erster Linie nicht in seinen eigenständigen Erkenntnissen, sondern in der Vermittlung griechischen philosophischen Gedankenguts an die lateinischsprachige Welt. Für die Niederschlagung der Verschwörung des Catilina und die daraus resultierende vorläufige Rettung der Republik ehrte ihn der Senat mit dem Titel pater patriae (Vater des Vaterlandes). He is considered the most famous orator of Rome. As a writer he was already in the ancient world as a stylistic model. His philosophical works are not based in its independent findings, but in the Greek philosophical mediation body of thought to the Latin-speaking world in the first place. For the suppression of the conspiracy of Catiline and the resulting provisional save the Republic, the Senate honored him with the title pater patriae (father of the nation).
