Jean Charlier de Gerson (1363 - 1429) war französischer Gelehrter, Pädagoge, Reformer und Dichter und Kanzler der Universität von Paris. Ein Hauptthema seiner Zeit war die Spaltung der katholischen Kirche (Schisma). Gerson trat zunächst für moderate Reformen ein und wandte sich gegen die Einberufung eines Konzils, das die rivalisierenden Päpste in Rom und Avignon absetzen sollte. Dann aber wirkte er durch Schriften (De potestate ecclesiae, De unitate ecclesiastica, De auferibilitate papae) und aktives Handeln auf die Überwindung des Schismas hin, namentlich auf den Konzilien zu Pisa (1409) und Konstanz (ab 1414). Jean Charlier de Gerson (1363 - 1429) was a French scholar, educator, reformer, and poet, chancellor of the University of Paris. A major theme of his time was the division of the Catholic Church (schism). Gerson joined initially for moderate reforms and opposed the convening of a council, which was to settle the rival popes in Rome and Avignon. Then he looked through his writings (De potestate ecclesiae, De unitate ecclesiastica, De auferibilitate Papae) back and positive action to overcome the schism, especially at the Councils of Pisa (1409) and Constance (from 1414).
