Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) war neben William Hogarth und Thomas Gainsborough der bekannteste und durch sein künstlerisches und kunsttheoretisches Wirken der einflussreichste englische Maler des 18. Jahrhunderts. 1768 wurde er erster Vorsitzender der neu gegründeten Royal Academy of Arts. In seinen jährlichen Reden bei der Preisverleihung der Royal Academy versuchte er der englischen Malerei eine Tradition zu verschaffen, und propagierte die Historienmalerei und den "Grand Style", der seiner Meinung nach der einzig angemessene Stil für diese Bildgattung darstellte. Durch seine Werke und seine Vorträge beeinflusste er den Geschmack der Sammler und damit die Kunstproduktion.

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was, along with William Hogarth and Thomas Gainsborough one of the most famous and influential British artists of the 18th century. In 1768 he became the first chairman of the newly founded Royal Academy of Arts. In his annual speeches at the awards ceremony of the Royal Academy, he tried to provide English painting with a tradition, and advocated historical painting and the ‘Grand Style’, which in his opinion, was the only appropriate style for this type of picture. Through his works and his discourses he influenced the taste of collectors and thereby the production of art.
