IQOQI 10 Year Anniversary - 10jähriges Jubiläum des Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information

Teil 4: Serge Haroche: "Controlling Photons in a Box - A Long Scientific Adventure"
Moderation: Anton Zeilinger (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften)
Serge Haroche ist Nobelpreisträger für Physik des Jahres 2012.
Abstract: The manipulation and control of single photons in cavities has been a very long term project, extending over decades. It has been made possible by the continuous support of the institutions which have trusted in it and by the exceptional colleagues and students who have worked on it. This talk recalls the main stages of this story and insists upon the crucial role of places and people in the life of a scientist. In conclusion, there will be a discussion this work is now being extended into other areas of physics and some remarks about the importance of blue sky research in a time when research driven by societal needs is being strongly emphasised.
