Fulvio Orsini (1592-1600), antiquarian and librarian of the Farnese family, spent his lifetime first in the retinue of cardinal Ranuccio, then, after the latter's death, in that of his brother Alessandro (1520-1589). He was assigned the task of keeping in order and augmenting the family's collection of antiquities, books and manuscripts. He is the author of numerous philological, historical and antiquarian studies, and brought together a large collection of antiquities, and built up a costly library of manuscripts and books, which later became part of the Vatican library . Fulvio Orsini's work imagines viroum illustrium is a kind of descriptive catalog of the antiquities collection of Orsini. He compares the different depictions of one and the same philosopher on portraits, statues, busts, epitaphs, coins, etc. and summarizes what is known about the sitter from ancient writings.

Fulvio Orsini's Werk Imagines viroum illustrium, ist eine Art beschreibender Katalog der Antikensammlung Orsinis. Er setzte sich mit den unterschiedlichen Bildnissen ein und derselben Philosophen in Statuen und auf Hermen, Epitaphien, Münzen etc. auseinander und fasste zusammen, was man über die Dargestellten aus den antiken Schriften wusste.
