Abstract
Ever since Karl Felix Wolff’s “Erzahlungen vom Reich der Fanes” (Tales of the Fanes) were first published as part of his Dolomitensagen in 1913, they became very popular in the Alpine region. They are a collection of fragmentary sagas that derive from much older, oral Ladin tradition, which Wolff heavily modified to unite two narratives that were not originally connected (Kindl 1997) into a coherent story. The tales take place at clearly distinguishable places in the Dolomite region, with the main characters moving throughout the region. In this article, the geographical information in Wolff’s collection is used to create literary maps with QGIS. This facilitates a visual reading of the places and travel routes mentioned in Ladin sagas. The results indicate the fragments’ geographical providence in the Val Badia, Val di Fassa, and Ampezzo. Furthermore, the visual analysis shows that one of the main characters, Ey-de-Net, as well as trips destined to the forging of alliances function as links between the areas.
