The photo plate and slide collection of the archive of the Institute for Astrophysics

Die Fotoplatten und Diasammlung des Archivs des Instituts für Astrophysik umfasst mehr als 10.000 Einzelobjekte. Diese, an den verschiedensten Teleskopen der Universitätssternwarte er-stellten Aufnahmen, decken einen großen Zeitraum der astronomischen Forschung in Wien ab. Die ältesten Aufnahmen stammen aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert. Diese zeigen zum Großteil Aufnahmen der Sonne, vor allem Sonnenfinsternisse, Bilder des Mondes aber auch frühe Foto-grafien und Zeichnungen der Planeten, welche abgelichtet wurden und den Studenten im Hörsaal als Anschauungsmaterial dienten. Eine besondere Bedeutung haben die Fotoplatten von Dr. Jo-hann Palisa (1848-1925), der 1883 in Tahiti die Sonnenfinsternis beobachtete und auch einige Fotoplatten davon mitbrachte. Seite den 1970er Jahren wuchs der Bestand, durch die Eröffnung des Leopold Figl-Observatoriums im Wienerwald Niederösterreich, stark an. Die Erschließung des Bestandes der Fotoplatten und Diasammlung erfolgt schrittweise. Im ersten Schritt werden die Beobachtungsbücher gesichtet und mit den vorhandenen Fotoplatten abgegli-chen. Im zweiten Schritt werden, wenn möglich die Aufnahmen digitalisiert und ins Repositorium Phaidra der Universität Wien eingespielt und damit der breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. The photo plate and slide collection of the archive of the Institute for Astrophysics comprises more than 10,000 individual items. These images, taken with various telescopes at the Universi-ty Observatory, span a long period of astronomical research in Vienna. The oldest recordings date back to the late 19th century. These mainly show images of the Sun, especially solar eclip-ses, pictures of the Moon, as well as early photographs and drawings of planets, which were captured and used as teaching material for students in lecture halls. Of particular importance are the photo plates by Dr. Johann Palisa (1848–1925), who observed the solar eclipse in Tahiti in 1883 and brought back some photo plates from there. Since the 1970s, the collection has grown significantly due to the opening of the Leopold Figl Observatory in Lower Austria. The indexing of the photo plate and slide collection is being carried out step by step. In the first step, the observation books are reviewed and matched with the available photo plates. In the second step, if possible, the images are digitized and uploaded to the Phaidra repository of the University of Vienna, making them accessible to the general public.
