Abstract (eng)
Obesity has become an increasingly serious problem for most industrialized societies. The condition appears to be linked with a range of comorbid psychic illnesses, most prominently depression. Even though the association between obesity and depression has to be considered as complex, recent findings and current opinion suggest that both illnesses may be treated effectively with similar types of therapy. This master’s thesis analysed the effectiveness of an obesity treatment program that was applied to 99 obese in-patients (59 with comorbid depression) with a BMI ≥ 30kg/m2 in a psychosomatic clinic in Lower Austria (PSZW). Weight and variables concerning psychological health and well-being were assessed at three time points: before, after and three months after therapy. Both groups lost significantly weight. There was also an improvement of psychic health in both groups. However, results hint towards a minimal deterioration of depressed patients during catamnesis.
