Abstract (eng)
This explorative study analyzes the popular Zumba Fitness® movement by using qualitative and quantitative methods. The characteristics of and motives for participation in this dance fitness program, which combines Latin American dance styles with certain aspects of aerobics, are explored using a specifically designed questionary on a sample of 257 Austrian exclusively female participants. The characteristics of Zumba® are examined by analyzing participant structure. Additionally, the view of an experienced Zumba® instructor has been included. The results based on quantitative data ascertainment and factor analysis have been used to model types relevant to six domains, using cluster analysis on the basis of fusion algorithms according to Ward. Beside the domain related types, individual user profiles have also been established. Relevant socio-demographic characteristics have been used to explain the modeling of clusters. It can be stated that „the“ typical Zumba® participant does not exist, but that Zumba® offers different aspects to a very heterogeneous field of participants.
