Abstract (eng)
My Master thesis focuses on civil defense in Czechoslovakia between 1947-1990 in the period of the Cold war. First I tried to explain the specific circumstances of the period of the cold war in which the possible danger of an atomic threat was headed with the structure of socialist civil defense and civil protection in the CSSR. The Civil defense of small cities and towns in the countryside was appointed by state controlled voluntary organizations. One of my conclusions was, that the development of the civil protection was highly connected to the soviet development with a small time slide. According to my research, fire fighters and Svazarm were important voluntary organizations providing civil defense for the inhabitants of smaller cities and in rural areas.
The most significant of these voluntary organizations were the Voluntary Fire Brigade and the Svazarm. They were responsible for the civil defense training of the population and through collaboration, enhanced the army. Military exercises in schools and in socialist run establishments, was also a part of their responsibilities. The structure of theses organisations show perfectly how a slight militarisation of the society could by achieved under the mantle of civil defense. This can be seen as a relevant part of the Cold War Culture in Czechoslovakia.
