Abstract (eng)
The present study "The Role of Politics in connection with Journalism in Austria" focuses on the question of how journalists perceive the influence of politics. To answer this question, a theoretical embedding of the topic was made. For this purpose, the agenda-setting-approach was used and, in particular, the further development of this approach was taken into consideration. As a next step, it was important to consider the media landscape in Austria. Therefore, print, television and radio were described and the relationship of these media to politics was discussed.
In order to answer the research-related questions on how journalists perceive the influence of politics on media coverage, how politics influences media coverage, and to assess the significance of a change of government in these contexts, qualitative interviews were conducted. In this course, journalists in Austria, who act as experts for this research, were consulted in one-to-one interviews. The interviews were analyzed by a qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. The results of this analysis show that politics can have an impact on media reporting in that politics generally sets topics that are taken up in journalists' media coverage. Furthermore, political actors try to use different ways to influence the mediacoverage in particular. This can be manifested in different ways during government changes.
