This master thesis deals with gender in the field of design and explores the critical potential of children in assessing stereotypically gender-specific products. The aim is to address the problem of gender norms. As a foundation of this work, pedagogical theories of bell hooks are used, which make critical potential of pupils, especially to discriminatory social structures, recognizable. In order to investigate children's critical potential for detection of gender norms, an empirical study was conducted. In February 2022, the study took place at a Viennese grammar school and included seven school classes or 98 pupils aged between 10 and 14 years. The pupils assessed images of gender norms and gender-specific products of their age group in relation to social gender roles and their personal gender. For this purpose, they answered a questionnaire with ten questions. The collected data from this questionnaire and an interview with a supporting teacher were analyzed by means of a qualitative content analysis. The central result of the study is that pupils exhibit critical potential on the topics of gender stereotypes, the binary gender system and gender-specific products. The wide range of (critical) views of the pupils is the focus of the results. This master thesis provides a qualitative scientific contribution to the current state of research and gives pupils a (critical) voice.
