Title (deu)
Die Semantik von δωρεάν in der LXX. Eine ergänzende Analyse der Überlegungen von Peter Spitaler
Author
Daichi Okawa
Description (eng)
In his essay, Peter Spitaler has challenged the long-taken-for-granted assumption that the Greek adverb δωρεάν is polysemous, since it has other meanings besides its basic meaning “freely”, namely “futile”, “without reason” and “to no purpose”. While in the LXX this word is used as a translation of the Hebrew polysemous word חנם, the crucial problem, however, lies in the fact that there is no evidence outside the Bible that δωρεάν has a meaning other than “freely”. If, as Spitaler claims, all the evidence for δωρεάν in the LXX can be understood and translated in terms of “freely” or “gratuitous”, then the widespread presupposition of the semantics of δωρεάν would prove to be flawed. For this reason, an analysis of all the evidence in the LXX, which Spitaler himself did not undertake, is significant. It is the purpose and aim of this paper to supplement and, if necessary, to complete Spitaler’s considerations.
