Description (eng)
The University Library is in the process of digitizing its analog sources into electronic forms. The film focuses on the process of developing audiobooks for the visually impaired library users. Unlike scanning books or transcribing them from scratch to make electronic copies, the process we are exploring is how visually impaired library users deal with textual or visual information. The short film reflects on a system of machines, people, and behaviors, comparable to the inscription devices and other actor-networks that comprise digitization processes. In this process of knowledge production, we are curious to see what kinds of 'worlds' are involved with what kinds of 'collectives’.
INSCRIPTION RHYTHMS (2022) was made by Aysel Aycan Aktas, Adil Aygün, and Renata Mandzhieva, in collaboration with Melanie Stummvoll during the Ma course "Visual Ethnographies of Science", taught at the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology (KSA) of the University of Vienna. The course was taught by Sarah Davies and Sanderien Verstappen, with tutoring of Viktoria Paar.
