Abstract (eng)
In the humanities, research results are increasingly being published in non-traditional formats: digital editions, enhanced eBooks, databases, or wikis. Preserving their content—and their functionality—over the long term is no trivial undertaking. Research funders are increasingly specifying timeframes within which a digital publication must be fully functional. However, after the completion of a research project, there are often no longer any human or financial resources available for the technical maintenance of the web applications.
The Vienna University Computer Center and the data stewards at the humanities faculties of the University of Vienna approached this problem from two directions: First, a service for archiving static websites was established – the first object was uploaded to the PHAIDRA repository in June 2024. Second, comprehensive guidelines were written. These guidelines are intended to raise awareness among researchers and web developers in a readable introduction and then describe technical aspects and services of the University of Vienna and its partners in detail. This is intended to ensure that archiving is considered early in the planning process. Furthermore, a cooperative service for preserving dynamic functions is to be established in the medium term.
