A Fedora 3.8 compatlible version of Phaidra Importer
Purpose of the service
The Phaidra Importer is a very simple tool that you can use for
Creating your own “Images of Books” online, by structuring them with chapters. It allows you to assign a Permanent Identifier to both, book and pages. The Image of the produced book will be available via Phaidra Book Viewer.
Creating collection of materials like collection of scientific papers or images. The digital objects are citable (Permanent Identifier)
Target
The target of this service are users of the System Phaidra, scientists involved in processes of digitisation, archivists, librarians or institutions that need a simple bulk-upload procedure of pictures or textes or scanned pages of traditional books. The Phaidra Importer is the ideal tool for self-archiving issues in case of collections of scientific papers.

Easy to install
Easy to use: you can import files, add further pages of books, insert chapters, restructure an order with very simple drag and drop functions, import .pdfs and restructure them, create collections and sub-collections, import metadatata files, export them, create images of books in .epub format or
Phaidra.Book format.
The implementation was carried out by an Italian company on the basis of the
analysis and requirements jointly defined by the University of Padua and the
University of Vienna. The project coordinator is the University of Padua.
The Universities of Padua and Vienna accomplished the following activities on the Phaidra Importer prototype:
Joint test of the application
Drafting of the users’ guide in Italian, German and English
Coordination of the translation of the user interface in further languages

Requirements
Compliance to different operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux
Development environment: Java
Application easy to install/uninstall
Languages: Italian, English, German with possibility to add other languages
Object types: Book (with their members as Pages) and Collection (with their members as Single Objects)
Source format: Tiff, Jpeg, Pdf, Phaidra metadata.xml
Exported format: Jpeg, Tiff, Pdf, Epub for books, XML book/collection, pages and single objects, structure and metadata
Interface:
- Book/Collection Structure (left panel): easy way to drag and drop files, add files, add blank page…
- Metadata (right panel): possibility to customize Phaidra metadata; choice of classifications and thesauri by a drop-down menu
Mainsteps to upload an object
Choose the target (a Phaidra repository that should be addressed)
Decide: “Book” or Collection?”
Select the source folder and start the upload process into the Phaidra Importer
Structure the data in the folder (with the functionalities in the left panel)
Fill the metadata-editor (light version, one form)
In case of Collections: Start the upload process into Phaidra
> Your Collection is ready
In case of Books : create and insert the .pdf of the Book
Start the upload process into Phaidra
> Your Image of the Book is now ready to be accessed by the Phaidra Book Viewer
Other features
Import: user can import

> these single pages can be assigned a new order
Export: user can export

User can create books in ePub format
User can create collections of subcollections
User can create and add blank pages
Within the Phaidra Importer
> drag and drop functions
> undo functions
> add further images functions
> rename functions
> delete functions
Download it and install it. It is ready to use within the net of the University.
Important notice: Make sure you are allowed to ingest data into the system ( -> start first Phaidra and accept the terms of use).
You can now install the Phaidra Importer. Once installed you can start the application. It will start in English. You can select another language. To save these settings you have to start the application a second time, otherwise you can go on with the user-interface in English.
